The SolutionThe solution to ending homelessness requires a complete and effective program of prevention, and adequate new or subsidized housing affordable to the range of incomes below 30% of the area median income ($24,930). In Mercer County those earning less than 30% can only afford a maximum of $623 on housing.According to the new American Community Survey published by the Census Bureau on 2005 data, the percentage of Mercer County families paying more than 30% of their income for rent increased from 36% in 2000 to 46% in 2005. The Mercer Alliance Plan has detailed goals and action steps to effect the systemic changes needed for effective prevention, adequate housing construction, housing subsidy and income increases. But we need your help. Ending homelessness requires the involvement of private organizations, government, nonprofit organizations and in fact, the whole community. No single organization can do this alone. Despite great intentions, many organizations have tried to cure homelessness but failed to prevent or end it. Only with the cooperation of everyone will homelessness end. The Mercer Alliance is a collaboration of key stakeholders in Mercer County. Together, we will end homelessness with a goal in Mercer County of June 29, 2014.
