ID ProjectMercer Alliance implemented a project to help homeless individuals get a photo ID. Experts estimate that the cost to obtain proper photo ID for an individual is between $50 and $100. The homeless person often never had these important documents or has lost them. Without a photo ID, persons who are homeless often find they cannot successfully move out of homelessness and move toward self-sufficiency. The very lack of ID exacerbates and perpetuates their homelessness. They cannot get lawful employment. Often, basic social services and public benefits can be delayed. It is therefore critical that homeless people are able to obtain identification. This ID project works with local agencies to assist and pay for IDs for homeless individuals. Since starting this project, we have been able to assist 150 homeless individuals with obtaining their photo ID. We will be offering the program at the January 2012 Project Homeless Connect..
